George Stubbs (1724-1806) was among the greatest painters of the horse, and his noble ‘Mares and Foals’ was commissioned by the 1st Earl Grosvenor, one of his most important patrons.
The enchanted pastoral vision of ‘The Rest on the Flight into Egypt’ by Claude Lorraine (1600-82) is an exquisite example of the work which made him the most influential painter of idealised landscapes.
The dramatic ‘Conversion of St Paul’ by Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-1675) shows the strong influence of Rubens, the supreme master of the Flemish Baroque.
All the paintings in this exhibition have been kindly lent to the museum by the Duke of Westminster.
