Culture & Heritage

The story of culture and heritage in Cheshire has been a long and eventful one. It's a tale told in our many museums, where you can discover how the Romans conquered; why the county is built on salt and about life on our waterways.

Visit grand stately homes and ancient manor houses on a Cheshire heritage trail.

Heritage in CheshireExplore castles, Iron Age hill forts and a nuclear bunker. And, for the evenings, we're rich in the arts too.

There's quality theatre, spectacular open-air performances - and even our own opera house, deep in Cheshire's countryside.

Some places of interest include:

Bollington Discovery Centre

Situated in the impressive Clarence Mill - Bollington Discovery Centre tells the story of how the people of the town made it what it is today.

Anson Engine Museum

The Anson Engine Museum took delivery of the oldest Diesel engine in the country on 28th March - in time for the opening of the new season on Easter Sunday.

The engine was built in 1897 by Messrs Mirrlees, Watson and Yaryan in Glasgow. It was the first diesel engine made in Great Britain, and Mirrlees believe the third ever made in the world. The engine is joining the huge collection at the museum on Anson Road, Poynton.

Cheshire's Magnificent Seven

Wherever you are in Cheshire, the chances are you are within easy reach of a great day out. The National Trust has some awesome properties in Cheshire - where better to start your day out than at Tatton Park Mansion - often quoted as England's most complete historic estate.

Enjoy the freedom to roam acres of parkland and years of culture and heritage throughout the county.

Salt Museum

Britain's only Salt museum tells the fascinating story of Cheshire's oldest industry. Salt is essential to so many things in life - isn't it time that you found out why!
