Sandstone Trail

Sandstone Trail

The original Sandstone Trail officially opened in 1974. It has recently been extended, so it now links the towns of Frodsham and Whitchurch. This not only makes it more accessible by public transport, but also means you can enjoy some of the excellent facilities available in each town.

The Trail has been split into three sections of 17km or just over 10 miles, which most people should find an enjoyable days walk. Because the route follows the sandstone ridge, there are few facilities along the Trail - most pubs, cafes and shops are a short distance away. Please check opening times and always take some food and plenty to drink with you.

Surfaces along the Trail vary depending on the nature of the terrain, but they may be rough and uneven or slippery. The Trail is quite hilly and there are a number of short but fairly steep sections. In places these may be over natural bedrock, elsewhere there are built steps. Stiles are gradually being replaced with gates where possible, to make access easier.
