About Us

The Cholmondeley Family have lived at Cholmondeley since 1200. The present Castle was built in the early 19th Century by the 1st Marquess and was until her death in November 2015 the home of The Dowager Marchioness of Cholmondeley the wife of the late 6th Marquess who spent the greater part of her life creating the magnificent garden at Cholmondeley being determined to create a garden which would have its own identify. One of the winners of the 2016 Chelsea flower Show and 2017 RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park a visit to the Gardens is essential to enjoy these extensive ornamental gardens which attracts thousands of visitors each year eager to enjoy perfect plantings in these spectacular surroundings. With its beautiful Temple Water Garden with its small lake and two islands enclosed by fine specimen trees, recently extended and planted rose garden with over 350 new roses of varying varities, a new 100m long double herbaceous border, and the recently extended and reburbished Folly Garden. whatever the season within the gardens there are always plants and shurbs in flower from early bulbs through different types of magnolia, camellia, azalea and rhododendrons.  The Lily Pond situated below the Castle allows access to the Silver Garden and Castle terraces with view across the Parkland, whilst Tower Hill offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a woodland ramble amongst interesting shrubs and trees under planted with many wild flowers and bulbs.  The Lakeside Walk which is home to many different varietires of waterfowl and freshwater fish with its picnic area and play area affords magnificent views of Cholmondeley Castle across the Mere.  Children will enjoy the hiddens paths and play areas and adventure den.  St. Nicholas Chapel located within the Park is well worth a visit to enjoy its stained glass alter window, ornate panelling and peaceful atmosphere.  Whilst the Cholmondeley Tea Room is situated in the heart of the gardens. This is truly a garden for everybody young and old.

The castle is not open to members of the public.
