Our suggestions for a premium overnight stay in Chester.
Arrive in Chester by train.
Spend the morning on the river with Dee River Kayaking, who offer guided tours and instruction in both Kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard, so however you'd like to get your floating fix, you're covered.
The River Dee at Chester is the perfect place to experience the joy of river kayaking. You can enjoy nature as you paddle past Chester Meadows, the atmosphere of the river-front promenade, and soak in the history of sites such as the Roman city walls, the Old Dee Bridge, and the Chester Weir on your Chester Town Kayak Tour.
After all that fresh air, treat yourselves to lunch at Chester Market Hall, where even the fussiest of eaters will find something they love to eat. Choose from Mexican street food, authentic Bangladeshi fayre, pizza, Thai, delicious burgers, seafood, pasta not forgetting a range of cakes, ice cream and pasties, vegan cuisine and if you love cheese, Cheesy Bandits is a must!
With a full tum, it's time to get on the train to Delamere Forest for the afternoon, the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Take a stroll around the many trails, or a hike if you are more adventurous, hire a bike, or take part in one of the orienteering courses. Or for the even more adventurous amongst you, you may choose to go on an outdoor adventure at Go Ape, where you can swing through the trees on high ropes or slide through the forest on a segway.
After all that excitement it's time to head back to Chester for dinner at The Forge, an extraordinary dining experience by restaurateur and chef Mike Robinson. Continuing Mike’s passion for wild, sustainable British ingredients, and his love of simple cooking over fire and charcoal, The Forge has its kitchen front and centre in the middle of this lovely, and elegant space. Incredible dry aged beef and wild venison will be found in the maturation cabinets, awaiting their turn on the amazing forge grill, to be lovingly grilled and roasted over oak and beech logs.
End the day with an overnight stay at Hotel Indigo. As you would expect from a boutique hotel, the bedrooms are contemporary with a traditional twist. They’ve taken inspiration from beautiful historic Chester with three unique room designs – Material Layers, highlighting the architecture of the City; The Eastgate Clock featuring nods to the famous clock and its designer John Douglas; and Racecourse rooms paying homage to the UK’s oldest racecourse.
