Exciting new openings, attractions and events will make Cheshire a compelling choice of destination for day and short-break visitors in 2020.

New for 2020

The Spa at Carden, a £10m luxury spa, will open its doors in January. The huge new world-class wellbeing centre will be set in the 1,000-acre grounds of Carden Park, a 198-room country hotel with golf course near Chester. Features include two large vitality pools, a glamorous beauty lounge, soothing relaxation spaces, and treatments designed by Elemental Herbology. It will also have one of the UK’s largest spa gardens and an all-weather Bollinger Champagne bar.

BeWILDerwood Cheshire will be opening next to the historic Cholmondeley Castle Estate, South Cheshire in spring. Like the Norfolk original, the £5m woodland adventure park will be based on the story A Boggle at BeWILDerwood, created by author and founder Tom Blofeld, and provide an imaginative woodland playscape, with tree houses, suspended walkways, giant slides and a cast of curious characters.

Forest Holidays will open a new venue in Delamere Forest, in the heart of Cheshire, in November. Sixty-seven eco-sensitive log cabins will be set among the trees, providing luxurious family-friendly lodgings for short breaks that enable guests to truly get back to nature. In fact, it will be the first time people have been allowed to stay overnight in these ancient woods.

Chester Zoo will open a new aviary in spring, featuring exotic birds from South and Central America, including the Caribbean Flamingo and Roseate Spoonbill. Early in the year, the zoo will also reopen Monsoon Forest, which burnt down in 2018. The UK’s largest tropical house contains recreations of South East Asia habitats, a hot and humid place where animals such as the Sunda gharial crocodile thrive.

Taking place once every 10 years, The Knutsford Great Race returns in 2020 (13 October). The Cheshire town will step back in time as cyclists race Penny Farthings through the streets cheered on by bystanders dressed in period costume.

Jodrell Bank, Britain’s latest Unesco World Heritage Site, will celebrate 75 years of space exploration with new talks and tours exploring the heritage of the observatory and its giant white dish, the Lovell Telescope.

AND Festival (14-17 May), the UK’s only roaming digital festival, which will explore the industrial waterscape of the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey through art and film.

The first disco musical of the comedy Brewster’s Millions (8 May-13 June), will be staged at Storyhouse, Chester’s arts centre and home to the biggest repertory company outside the National Theatre and RSC.

“The BFG in Pictures” visits Chester’s Grosvenor Museum (11 July-4 October), an exhibition of reproductions of previously unseen early illustrations for Roald Dahl’s popular story curated by the illustrator Sir Quentin Blake.

A timely celebration for the year of the Tokyo Olympics, Tatton Park will host several events throughout the year themed on aspects of the Far East nation. The country estate near Knutsford is renowned for having one of the best examples of an authentic Japanese Garden outside Japan and highlights of its programme will include a rare display of Japanese woodblock prints collected in the 19th century.

A groundbreaking project addressing the environmental impact of the Industrial Revolution will take place in 2020 at Quarry Bank mill as part of the National Trust’s 125th birthday celebrations. “Unintended Consequences” will encourage visitors to help provide data for scientific research, with the aim of creating ideas and actions for change by engaging with fun events, activities, and art installations.
