Chester and Cheshire are in Tier 2, meaning you can see friends and family you do not live with (or do not have a support bubble with) outdoors, including alfresco dining, in a group of no more than 6. This limit of 6 includes children of any age.

You can continue to meet in a group larger than 6 if you are all from the same household or support bubble or another legal exemption applies.

We’ve teamed up with Izzy Grey from We Love Good Times to bring you a great selection of al fresco and ourdoor dining options in Chester:

“I love the winter! Getting cosy in big jumpers and scarves, and wasting time escaping the everyday taking photos in and around the city against a wintery backdrop. This year, there is more reason than ever to embrace the outdoors as so many of us feel much more comfortable outside – and the good news is that some of our favourite venues have upgraded their beer gardens, or even created beautiful brand new spaces for us to dine, drink and relax within our household bubbles.

Winter is also a great season for food and drink. Casseroles, stews and hearty dishes appear on our menus, and local Chefs have a field-day with the best quality local produce. So this year I’m super-excited about spending lots more time in the great outdoors, enjoying seasonal dishes, big red wines and lots of good times with my nearest and dearest.

Here is my selection of the best Winter outside spaces in and around Chester – along with my suggestions for the best dishes and drinks to enjoy while you’re there."

Hickory’s Smokehouse Chester

We know how much effort these guys put into their outside drinking and dining spaces, and Chester has to be the pièce de résistance with their incredible walled garden. A post-lockdown masterpiece with the stunning backdrop of the River Dee. And who doesn’t absolutely love Hickory’s? This super-popular venue always looks amazing at Christmas time and the festive foodie treats are totally delicious!

Watch this space for details …

Ring O’Bells, Christleton Chester

Stop everything!  And check out the Ring O’Bells brand new Tipi, this takes Winter Alfresco dining to a whole new level! I always describe this fabulous place as one of our Great Cheshire Pubs. Chef Andrew King heads up an award-winning kitchen and its always a really good quality experience all-round, and definitely worth the five minute car journey from the city centre. Chef Andrew loves the Winter as much as I do, so you can be sure of some delicious hearty dishes as well as some bloody good seasonal ales from this favourite country pub – and who wouldn’t want to dine in that stunning new tipi?

Blue Bell 1494 Chester

Now this is a real gem in the city centre – a beautifully authentic Spanish tapas bar with this gorgeous garden. We reviewed Blue Bell 1494 recently and gave it five stars (click here to find out why) so give it a go, it really is a very special place with another great ghost story from 1645. We went back just a couple of weeks ago with the children, and were just as impressed as we had been back in the Summer. New dishes included Queso de Cabra Frito – deep fried Goats cheese drizzled with honey & served with quince jelly, and Vieras Fritas – pan fried scallops with a pancetta & Parmesan crumb, served on a fresh pea purée. Both of which were delicious!

Duttons

I love the new look Duttons – and the fact that it sits on the most beautiful street in the city (Godstall Lane) just makes it all the more gorgeous. Sitting outside Duttons enjoying a delicious alfresco lunch with a glass of wine or two is an affordable treat – and the staff are delightful too. I recommend the Cheshire cheese and onion pie with sauté potatoes, wilted spinach & chive cream sauce.
