SpareParts return to Crewe for 2021 with Journeys a 2-day outdoor family art trail coming to the town on 21 & 22 August commissioned by Crewe Town Council.

The trail offers audiences the chance to experience the different sites featured in the art trail. These have been curated into three districts within the town; each offering a creative, interactive and immersive journey, exploring in some way the environment and our relationship with it.

The weekend’s focus centres around the current climate crisis and each district connects to the themes of environmental preservation, ecological balance and the importance of nature and clean air.

District One (Victoria Street) features The Great Story of the Infinite Drawing by Elly Oldman. Following an accident in 2017, the French Illustrator embarked on the creation of an endless drawing on Instagram. The result is a 15m outdoor artwork for families, telling a magical fable, with an ecological and environmental focus. This district will also include live pop-up performance from local male performance company, D.O.P.E on Sunday, inspired by Pandora’s Box.

In District Two (Market Square) audiences can experience Breathing Room by Anna Berry. This is a striking kinetic installation in which a tunnel lined with cones ‘breathes’, creating an otherworldly immersive journey, which visitors will be encouraged to travel through.

Completing the trail in District Three (Christchurch Gardens) Sit, Stop by Sally Hogarth offers a quiet space to reflect. In a series of  nine structures people are invited to sit, pause and reflect on their natural surroundings.  ‘Taking Flight’, a series of duets, from dance company Movema,  an exciting and thought-provoking performance will also premiere in this area.

Chair of the Crewe Town Council Marketing and Events Committee Cllr Joe Cosby said, “It’s been fantastic to once again work with the SpareParts team to develop a free and family focused arts trail within Crewe Town Centre.

The last 16 months have been challenging for the Crewe community, the ability to explore outdoor spaces have proved essential for our wellbeing, we therefore wanted to create a programme of activity which embraced the towns amazing outdoor spaces such as Christ Church whilst providing a safe environment for participants to come along and enjoy.

The Journeys Arts Trail is a great opportunity for residents to come back into Crewe Town, exploring the town at their own pace. It’s a chance to experience international arts installations, to reimagine areas of the town, to sit, stop and reflect.

I’m very excited to once again have cultural activity hitting the streets of Crewe”.

SpareParts Artistic Director, Jodie Gibson says, “We look forward to welcoming visitors to the art trail, whereby our aim is to offer a surprising, diverse and imaginative journey across Crewe Town Centre. It is an opportunity to discover new ways of seeing and experiencing the world we live in, whilst considering how we ensure a thriving planet for all living things in the future.”

Journeys comes to Crewe Town Centre on 21 & 22 August from 11am - 4pm. For more details on the trail and SpareParts visit https://sparepartsfestival.co.uk/crewe2021
