Visitors to Chester can now pop in their earphones to find out more about the city’s famous Rows, thanks to a new audio tour, ‘Discover The Rows’ (
The new self-guided tour offers an entertaining and informative stroll along the open, first-floor galleries that overlook the city’s historic heart. An assortment of medieval, Tudor, Georgian, Victorian and contemporary architecture, the Rows are unique in the world.

On the tour, visitors will unearth Roman treasure, decode a message about a possible visit to the city by Catherine of Aragon, hear about Chester's silversmithing industry, and see England’s oldest shopfront.
Visitors will also learn about the traders who have sold their wares here down the centuries and see for themselves why the Rows remain popular as a place to shop, drink and dine – and for welcome shelter during poor weather.

Meanwhile, ‘Refresh’, a new programme of arts and cultural activity for Chester, has commissioned original short stories and character monologues inspired by the Rows, to be published and performed in March 2022. For up-to-date information, follow @createchester on Twitter.
Discover The Rows and Chester Rows Medieval Meet and Greet Experience are part of a three-year High Streets Heritage Action Zone project funded by Historic England.
