The city of Chester began life as a Roman garrison town and is the only place in the UK to have a full circuit of city walls, parts of which date back nearly 2 millennia.
With steps spaced at intervals around them they`re a great way to explore the cities` heritage sites. These include the Roman Amphitheatre and Roman Gardens, Chester Castle and the 10th century Chester Cathedral. Let’s not forget The Roodee either, established in 1539 it`s said to be the World’s oldest operational racecourse.
Another famous landmark is the ornate Eastgate Clock which is mounted on the city walls where they cross the busiest shopping thoroughfare of the same name. It`s said to be the second most photographed clock in the country after Big Ben!
This street is also home to The Rows. Unique to Chester, they’re a medieval double gallery of shops with an eclectic mix of high street and independent retailers. And wherever you go in the city you`re never far from the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and freshly baked pastries so there`s plenty of opportunity to refuel. Alternatively, you might like to visit the food hall in the revamped indoor market off Northgate Street which also offers a fine selection of fresh produce and artisan gifts.
Chester has a lively night life with late opening bars, taverns and clubs and its many restaurants offer a truly international cuisine. For film and theatre look to the Storyhouse on Hunter St. This complex also houses a library and restaurant and offers children’s events during the school holidays.
But if you`re seeking a more relaxed ambience head to the River Dee, a short walk from the centre. Hire a rowing boat or pedalo, take a trip on a paddle steamer, or just relax with an ice-cream and watch the world go by. Theres greenspace at the nearby Grosvenor Park which has a playground, and a miniature railway which delights all ages.
The city centre is a well sign posted ten-minute walk from the station but there’s a shuttle bus which will take you there for a small fare.
Chester Railway Station has won a number of awards in Cheshire Best Kept Station Competition.
Chester Station is managed by Arriva Trains Wales.
