About Us

The mighty Anderton Boat Lift, known as Cheshire's 'Cathedral of the Canals' is an iconic attraction and a great, family-friendly day out.

Built in 1875, it was the world's first ever successful boat lift, designed to bridge the 50 feet gap between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal. An engineering masterpiece, not only does it still do the job it was designed to do, but it does so with the most ingenious and endearing character of any structure on the canal system today.

Visitors to the boat lift can enjoy FREE access to the fun and interactive visitor centre, tree-top coffee shop overlooking the lift and gift shop packed with interesting and unusual gifts/souvenirs. However, if you really want to experience Anderton Boat Lift in all its glory, take a boat trip up and down the lift (the short one - 30 minutes) or through the lift and along the River Weaver (the long one - 75 minutes).

For the intrepid among you, there is also an opportunity to access the very top of the workings. But do you dare embark upon the thrilling ‘Top of the World Tour’?

In 2017, Anderton Boat Lift opened a brand new, fully accessible adventure play area. There is also a maze (built from the old counterweights that used to hang from the lift), insect village, picnic areas and lift view marquee (for weddings and corporate events) within the grounds.
