Encircled by its protective wall, Dunham Massey is a green oasis nestling between the urban sprawl of Manchester and rural tranquility of Cheshire.
Dunham’s Lost Years: a Victorian Tale of Love and Abandonment
See the House transformed to revisit its Victorian past. Meet the 7th Earl and his new wife, skilled circus performer Catharine Cox. See their story of love, status and scandal played out throughout the House and discover how they altered the course of Dunham’s history forever.
A ramble around the Park will reveal a range of architectural oddities and views of the house punctuated by the resident herd of fallow deer; you may also glimpse other wildlife including owls and woodpeckers. Enjoy guided walks in the Garden and Deer Park, or take the chance to wander freely along the tree-lined avenues.
Relax amongst the natural beauty of the Garden. A great plantsman's garden with interesting historic features such as the Orangery, Pump House, Victorian Bark House and the remains of an Elizabethan Mount, this varied site with its acid conditions provides a wide range of unusual shade and moisture loving plants including Giant Chinese Lilies and rare late flowering azaleas, all set amongst manicured lawns, mixed borders and cool woodland.
From 14 May 2016 visit the historic stable buildings. The buildings reveal the comings and goings of the family and their workers, the importance of horses and later the motor car.
Unusual gifts, homemade produce and plants await you at the shop, as well as delicious hot meals in the Stables Restaurant and light meals and snacks in the visitor centre café. With trails for families and a natural play area, there’s plenty to brighten your day at Dunham.
