About Us

Yet the rural hamlet of Englesea Brook was once a centre of radicalism and is home to one of the Methodist Church’s most important historic sites – a Georgian chapel where the story of the Primitive Methodists is told. The ‘Prims’ were a breakaway movement from Wesleyanism, founded by Hugh Bourne (whose grave lies here) and his followers, who transformed the lives of working-class people. They preached a progressive interpretation of their faith at evangelical camps on nearby Mow Cop in the early 19th century, before moving to chapels such as the one you can look around here. There is an inspiring exhibition, too, that explains the Prims’ quest to educate and improve the living and working conditions of ordinary people, featuring a collection of more than 5,000 artefacts, from paintings and ceramics to a preacher’s pulpit and the UK’s largest collection of religious banners.

As a Methodist this is a must-see. I learned so much about the "Prims" and why this group broke away from Methodism in the early 1800's. The volunteers there are so friendly and knowledgeable, and... Read full review
