Grade: Easy
Distance: Trail around small town
Time: Follow at own pace

Once a major port and more recently an important centre for coal mining, Neston today is a pleasant market town on the Wirral Peninsula.

The silting of the Dee shifted the port away to nearby Parkgate and the local pit closed down in 1928. However, today Neston is home to a thriving community, proud of their town and keen to invite visitors to come and discover its rich heritage.

This trail, reproduced courtesy of Neston Civic Society, highlights many of the most interesting buildings in the town. These range from the parish church, occupying a site on which places of worship have stood since the Domesday Book; to an ancient stone barn, dating from the 1600’s.

Within the fabric of all these buildings, is captured the very essence of this small English town. They each tell the tale of how the personalities and events of the past, helped shaped the attractive and welcoming place we see today.

The directions used for this walk were written by Geoffrey Place.

Copies of the Neston Town Trail are available in leaflet form (including map and line drawings by Bernadette and Naomi Bowes). These are available free from Neston Library, Neston Civic Hall and Neston Town Hall.
