The High Cross at the centre of this staggered junction – from where a busker might be serenading you today – is a version of the 14th-century original that was pulled down by the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. The red sandstone cross was only restored to this spot in 1975 and the version you can see dates from the mid-20th century, although the lantern head is thought to be a remnant of its predecessor.
