An Exploration of Class with Mark Hamlin

Social class is deep-rooted in Britain. As a system of oppression, classism assigns value to each of us and our communities based on our class positions. While the consequences of this are extensive and complex, they are made to seem normal and often ignored.

In this 3-hour workshop we will explore our own experience of class with the aim of developing a greater sense of awareness, knowledge and language to understand how class dynamics are perpetuated.

What to expect

This experiential workshop draws on our individual and collective experiences using interactive exercises and a mix of small and large groups.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for those interested in building resilient communities: individuals, social change groups, religious organisations, political groups and commercial enterprises. In particular it is for those who wish to gain a better understanding of how class dynamics are perpetuated and how becoming class aware and inclusive is essential to creating resilient communities.

Mark was born in Edinburgh and brought up just outside the city within a working-class community. He spent much of his life ignoring the impact of his class background. Now, exploring his working-class roots, he is developing a deeper sense of who he is, and believes that by understanding and sharing how our class backgrounds have shaped us, we can organise and work more effectively within our communities and organisations.

Mark is an advanced Process Work Diploma Student, independent facilitator and trainee psychotherapist.
