About Us

Established in 1539, racing has taken place on the Roodee for 480 years, making the racecourse the oldest still in operation in the world. The organisers of Chester Heritage Festival are pleased to be joining with Chester Race Company to celebrate this milestone. Chester’s Midsummer Watch will be staging a special parade from the Linenhall carpark to the racecourse at lunchtime.

Chester’s Town Crier will declare the start of the day’s festivities and the Festival launched once the parade arrives on course. Expect jousting and chariot displays between races from the Devils Horsemen. Younger racegoers will have the opportunity to take part in a host of activities on the Open Course: to become Celts and attempt to overcome the Romans aka the Grosvenor Museum Youth Panel defending their fortress; take part in mosaic crafts and Roman helmet making; and meet the legion of Romans on course. Entrance is free for those aged 17 and under when accompanied by a full paying responsible adult.
