About Us

Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to be returning to Chester Cathedral on Saturday 10th July for its first live performance in over a year.

The concert will be conducted by Daniel Parkinson, a familiar face to Chester concert audiences, and features returning violinist Michael Foyle as concerto soloist. Due to current Covid restrictions, the concert will follow a different structure to usual. The audience (and orchestra) will be socially distanced and the concert will run without an interval.

The restrictions of 2020 and 2021 have presented numerous challenges for all musical groups, Chester Philharmonic being no exception. For over a year, the orchestra was unable to rehearse at all so creative planning was needed to ensure that once rehearsals could get underway, the chosen programme would work for a slimmed-down concert and also provide plenty to interest a returning audience. Beethoven Symphony No. 1 fits the bill perfectly in this respect. Shorter in length and refreshingly classical in style, this early symphony is enduringly popular with audiences. In contrast, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto provides a perfect counterpoint. Scored for a classically proportioned orchestra, Mendelssohn’s last major orchestral piece is Romantic in style and provides an exhilarating display of virtuosity. The orchestra is delighted to welcome back Michael Foyle as soloist. An accomplished performer on the international stage, Michael has been praised for playing of ‘compelling conviction’ (The Daily Telegraph) and performances ‘full of sparkling detail, with tonal beauty and incisive rhythmic clarity, balancing wit and poetry’ (The Strad).

The orchestra is privileged to be performing once again under the baton of Daniel Parkinson. Daniel is the Associate Conductor of Northern Ballet and a regular Guest Conductor for Scottish Ballet. He has conducted performances in many of the UK’s major theatres. During the pandemic, Daniel brought together a group of friends to record Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite in aid of Help Musicians. Having spent his childhood in Kelsall, Daniel has enjoyed a long association with the Chester Philharmonic, first performing with the orchestra as a violinist nearly twenty years ago!

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £15 for adults, reduced to £5 for school children and students, and are available from Chester Cathedral Booking Office on 01244 500959.
