Englesea Brook have created a display exploring the Black History of Primitive Methodism. The display opens on Saturday 18th September 2021, just in time for Black History Month UK in October. It will be in place until October 2022. It begins by exploring Methodist opposition to, and campaigns for, the abolition of the slave trade and the emancipation of slaves. It brings to light Zilpha Elaw, an "American Female of Colour", who wrote about the discrimination she experienced on account of her race and gender when preaching in British chapels in the 1840s. The difficulties of exploring PM missions to Africa are discussed and questions posed about how we can join with those we share our faith with today. The display ends by examining home missions within the UK, highlighting the Whitechapel Mission. A variety of artefacts will be on display, including missionary collecting boxes, photographs, and Nigerian instruments and dishes.

To accompany the display, throughout October 2021, there will be tours of Englesea Brook's Collections Store, exploring the Black History artefacts not exhibited in the museum. Visitors can also get a sneak-peak behind-the-scenes, seeing how we care for our collection. Please find the dates and times for the tours under 'Openings'. They take place on Thursdays throughout October.
