The powerhouse that was Chester in medieval times ebbed from the 1700s on. The City changed its direction away from industry, despite this the Victoria County History notes that: "Between 1871 and 1914 the limited expansion of modern industries in Chester thus brought a somewhat greater integration with the international industrial economy. By 1914 the city had three engineering firms, Hydraulic Engineering, Henry Wood, and Brookhirst, which were leaders in their fields and, together with the leadworks, gave the city a more significant national role in manufacturing than is commonly perceived".

The lecture explores these three companies in terms of the industry, invention and innovation that led to their position on the world stage.

Booking: opens 1 August; closes 15 September at 09:00; via Eventbrite here.  If the lecture is not already fully booked, tickets will be available on the night.  The lecture theatre is on the ground floor of the Grosvenor Museum, which is accessible by lift at the entrance. Doors will open at 19:00.
