About Us

Set in the heart of a beautiful Cheshire village, next to the Bridgewater Canal, Lymm Heritage Centre tells the village's fascinating story through its Trades, Transport and Traditions. Using historic artefacts, models , images and video The Centre brings to life the development of the village from the arrival of the Bridgewater Canal in 1766 through to the modern era, celebrating the stay of Pele and the Brazil team for the World Cup exactly 200 years later in 1966.
Throughout the Victorian era the village was dominated by the fustian cutting trade which brought hardship and poverty to thousands. The village also briefly had a salt industry as well as being a centre for gold beating.
Lymm has a remarkable number of traditional events which have survived urbanisation and world wars, from soulcaking to rushbearing and morris dancing to May Queen. We will tell you all about them and show you the Soulers' horse's head.
There is plenty for all the family here. As well as a fascinating Lego model of the canal and a working railway reconstruction of the building of the Ship Canal there are plenty of activities to keep the kids involved and interested. There's even a Time Traveller's Trail to take you on an adventure round the village with a prize at the end. And everyone wants to meet Kerry the Chirotherium, our very own dinosaur.
There is parking right next to the centre and you are in the perfect starting place to explore the village on foot before dropping in at one of Lymm's many coffee shops, restaurants or pubs. Admission is free, though of course as a charity run entirely by volunteers we always welcome donations. There's a small retail area too with books, jigsaws and other gifts all on a Lymm theme.
We look forward to welcoming you – Thursday to Sunday pm all the year round. Check the website for up to date opening info during the Covid crisis before travelling. www.lymmhic.co.uk
