About Us

A proclamation has called for all minstrels, troubadours, mummers and stall holders to attend, entertain and serve throughout the day; and refreshments will be available. The minstrels will also play in the streets before returning to St John’s for the Minstrels’ Court around 13:00 to renew their licence to perform in Chester. This ancient tradition of licensing musicians and entertainers, dates back to 1204. It is one of few historical re-enactments in the UK that takes place in its original setting.

Today the minstrels are licensed to join the Midsummer Watch Parade, which starts from Town Hall Square at 14:00 and passes the church half an hour later. There are many Chester Heritage Festival events to keep the whole family busy during the day.

Don’t miss the Youth Panel’s activities, Medieval Trade, at the Grosvenor Museum before the Minstrel’s Court, or their activities, Victorians at Leisure, at the Bandstand, after the parade. Other possibilities will develop landscape detective skills; rebuild the city in Lego; introduce Roman myths and legends; and go in search of friendly ghosts.
