About Us

As part of the Chester Heritage Festival the Grosvenor Museum’s Youth Panel are celebrating the story of the River Dee and its rich heritage with family activities depicting different times in the river’s history.

For 800 years, Chester has had a Trades Guild. Guilds were set up to protect the interests of Chester’s craftsmen and women such as Carpenters, Tailors, Spicers, Ale and Cheese Makers, Ropers, Weavers and Tanners. The River Dee played an important role in transporting goods. Leather, spices, furs, cloth and other goods were brought in to Chester by ship for use by guildsmen and women. Rather like an early trade union, the Guilds encouraged fair trade and fair wages. They set up apprenticeships and gave aid to older workers and those unfit for work. The Guilds also took part in Chester’s social life, organising the Mystery Plays and other entertainments.

The Grosvenor Museum’s Youth Panel will bring the medieval Guilds back to life with a hands-on activity session. Visitors can explore the different skills of these craftsmen and women, try some of their crafts and try to match their tools to their trade. There will also be Mystery play- style dressing up and dancing!
