About Us

This is a change to our original programme and we are grateful to Richard Martin for agreeing to present his book, ‘Ships of the Chester River` published earlier this year.  Although Chester’s port declined in the late 18th and early 19th century, shipbuilding continued throughout the 19th century and beyond.  More than 800 seagoing vessels were built on the river as the Dee Estuary became a hive of industry.  Richard’s book explores the industrial development on the Dee Estuary, focusing on the shipbuilding activities in Chester and Connah’s Quay and is the first ever about the shipyards of the Dee.

Following Richard’s introduction of his book and the story of the ship building on the Dee, take a short walk to Storyhouse to watch another story of Chester’s past unfold at 13:00 as part of Chester Heritage Festival.

FREE event.
