About Us

The tour is led by Peter Carrington of Chester Archaeological Society. It provides a chance to catch up with the latest ideas about the amphitheatre and its surroundings: Stone Age and Iron Age discoveries; the development and design of the amphitheatre; its reuse in Saxon and Viking times; incorporation into the medieval ‘Bishop’s Borough’ based on St John’s Church; the emergence of the area as a fashionable suburb in the 18th cent and as a focus of Anglican-Catholic rivalry in the 19th century.

There is no wheelchair access to the arena. However, with two working days’ notice to the Chester Heritage Festival office, the route can be adapted for those with mobility difficulties.

Meet at the entrance to the amphitheatre adjacent to Souter’s Lane.
