About Us

This walk of Christleton, a village which predates the Domesday book, is led by David Cummings from the Christleton Local History Group. You will visit St James’ Church, which dates to 1470, although the present building (a Butterfield design) was completed in 1876. The walk then takes you to the Village Pond, to learn about marling, and then to the Shropshire Union Canal (1772), the site of three boatbuilding yards in the 1930’s from which the leisure industry of the modern canal era, developed. Education has also played an important part in village life, and David will discuss the heritage of several types of school, from dame, to private, to charity, to church and county schools, also a College of Law. You will also learn about the Battle of Rowton Moor, and the effect on the village from the Parliamentarian Army garrisoned here in 1645.

Meet at the Church Lychgate facing the Village Green. (There is a car park at the back of the church approached from Little Heath Road.) The two-hour walk does include some uneven ground and stout walking shoes are recommended. Book in advance for this free walk.
