About Us

Be guided by Tour Guide, Marie Layng, through the sites of the Roman and Medieval harbours, then the Old Port Area and lastly the Canal Basin. Discover why the Romans came to Chester, the importance of the port in the Middle Ages, the reason Charles I was desperate to defend it during the Civil War and, finally, the struggle to compete with the rise of Liverpool. This fascinating story of the Port of Chester and its role in the 2000-year history of the city will take 90-minutes, or a little longer, to unravel. It also complements several other walks along Chester’s waterways during the Chester Heritage Festival. The walk is mostly on level ground, much on paved streets, but includes some steps. With two working days’ notice to the Chester Heritage Festival office, the route can be modified.

Meet at Racecourse entrance to 1539 Restaurant, Nuns Rd, Chester, CH1 2LY.

Guide Prices
