The Workhouse of Chester: The Lives of Others

Inside History presents "The Lives of Others" which will explore the lives of those who experienced life in the House of Industry by the Roodee and the Chester Union Workhouse in Hoole in Victorian Chester.

From short term inmates and those who depended heavily on the Workhouse to the Master of the House himself, William Aldis, we will delve into the records to uncover the lives of 5 individuals who called the workhouse their home at some point in their lives.

Along the way we will learn the differing reasons as to why people entered the workhouse, a celebrity guest who stayed the night and even a murder that occured on the grounds.

Inside History will be using historical records and newspaper reports in order to bring these stories vividly to life.
