Cheshire’s salt – the precious mineral on which this county sits – has been prized since Roman times.

Add Lion Salt Works to your Itinerary

It’s a story brilliantly told at the Lion Salt Works, one of the last open-pan sites in the world, an intriguing warren of stove, boiler and pan houses renovated to reveal how salt was extracted from the underground brine lakes and transformed into a coveted commodity. Immerse yourself in the high-tech wizardry of Salt Pan 3, which recreates the steamy and dangerous conditions where bare-chested men toiled over great vats of the boiling brine. Stand at the bar in the old Red Lion pub, where the workers were once served refreshing pints of beer with a replenishing pinch of salt. Spot the worker’s boots encrusted with salt crystals and the sardine tins that, curiously, wages were paid in. Then step out on the towpath of the Trent & Mersey Canal, where salt was once hauled to Liverpool’s docks, the gateway to the world.

** Business Events Venue of the Year Award Winner at the Marketing Cheshire Tourism Awards 2022/23**

Tatton Park’s ancient Parkland is just waiting to be explored.

This beautiful corner of Cheshire has been home to deer herds since 1290 and they wander as freely as visitors throughout the year. The 50-acre Garden is one of the most picturesque and varied in England, with ever-changing seasonal views across the world-renowned Japanese Garden, Walled Kitchen Gardens and Arboretum, plus the historic glasshouses, maze and topiary.

The 18th century Mansion displays treasured collections of the well-travelled Egerton family including a recently-discovered portrait by renaissance artist Francesco Salviati. The amazingly-complete Servants’ Quarters provide a fascinating insight into life ‘downstairs’ for 18th century servants in a grand house.

And a family favourite is the working rare breed Farm, where you can step back in time as its ‘field to fork’ story brings to life bygone farm characters, rare breed animals and seasonal demonstrations. Don’t forget to say hello to the pigs, sheep, donkeys, chickens, horses and goats! Tatton Park hosts a huge programme of events throughout the year.

    Visit www.tattonpark.org.uk for details

Tatton Park welcomes dogs in the Parkland, Farm and Stableyard outdoor area under close control. In some clearly signed areas, including some areas of the Farm and parts of the Parkland, dogs must remain on a lead.

Unfortunately, we are unable to permit dogs to swim in the Meres, or go inside the Gardens, Play Area, Mansion, Old Hall, Restaurant and shops.

We allow assistance dogs, such as guide dogs, in all areas.

Quarry Bank is one of Britain's greatest industrial heritage sites

Quarry Bank is one of Britain's greatest industrial heritage sites, showing how a complete industrial community lived. Here you can discover the story of mill workers, mill owners and how the Industrial Revolution changed our world forever.

On your visit, you can explore the domestic life of the mill-owning Greg family in their home, Quarry Bank House. Or wander through the stunning picturesque gardens that rise up the banks of the river valley for stunning views and spectacular changes through the seasons. In the restored glasshouse and kitchen garden, you can see the array of exotic fruits and vegetables that were grown for the wealthy Gregs' table.

For an alternative view of life in the Industrial Revolution, take a guided tour of the Apprentice House to step into the lives of the pauper children who worked 10 hours a day in the mill. Or stroll to Styal village to see how many of the other workers lived. In the village hub, a permanent exhibition explores the living conditions of the workers compared to life in the centre of Manchester. A tour of a two-up-two-down worker's cottage offers an insight into more than 150 years of history and invites you to compare your life to those of the workers.

On the estate there are acres of woodland to explore. Follow the meandering path of the river Bollin as you look out for an array of wildlife and beautiful views.

Situated in the historic site of the original Weaving Shed, the mill café now offers you a place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal after exploring all that Quarry Bank has to offer. Alternatively you can head to the garden café to enjoy the surroundings with a light lunch or a slice of cake, or treat yourself to an ice cream from Stables Ice Cream Parlour.

In the mill and garden shops, you’ll find a range of gifts, homeware and garden products. For a unique souvenir, make sure you pick up a Quarry Bank glass cloth, which has been woven on heritage looms in the mill.

Dogs on leads are welcome around the wider estate and on a short lead in the mill yard, garden, Styal village, and footpaths through the main visitor areas of Quarry Bank.

Dogs on leads are welcome to join you if you are visiting the Upper Garden Café.

Dogs are welcome in the visitor welcome building, the upper garden shop and the mill yard shop.

Only assistance dogs are permitted inside the Weaving Shed Restaurant, Mill, Quarry Bank House, the Apprentice House, Village Hub and Workers Cottage.

There are four great walks around the Quarry Bank estate that are ideal to explore with your dog all year round. They take anywhere between twenty minutes to two and a half hours to complete. For more information speak to a member of the visitor reception team.

The stunning historic house at Lyme

Glorious house, surrounded by gardens, moorland and deer park Nestling on the edge of the Peak District, Lyme Park was once a great sporting estate and home of the Legh family for over 500 years. The house is renowned for its elegant interiors and beautiful gardens, against a backdrop of sweeping moorland with extensive views across Manchester and the Cheshire Plain. Step inside the house and discover unusual objects and strange secrets as you walk through six centuries of family history, including the Lyme Missal, the most important printed book in the National Trust’s collection. The 1,400 acre estate with its medieval herd of red deer is a paradise for bird-watchers and wildlife spotters, and hosts regular guided walks and running events. For a more tranquil stroll, explore the Edwardian rose garden, ravine garden or orangery next to the reflecting lake where a certain Mr Darcy met Miss Bennett in the BBC production of 'Pride and Prejudice'.

There's plenty of room for little ones to let off steam, whilst the Timber Yard Cafe offers hot and cold snacks, soups, and a range of cakes.

Visit the Timber Yard café for a selection of hot meals or book into the Salting Room for a luxury afternoon tea.

Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of Lyme.

Park: Dogs are welcome in all areas of the park. To protect the wildlife that calls Lyme home, we ask that dogs are kept on leads in areas of the park.

We recognise how important it is for dogs to be able to get exercise off the lead, so we offer a secure off-lead dog-walking area in Knightslow Wood all year round as well as a route through Pursefield Wood. To find out more, keep an eye out for signs in the park and use the maps below to plan your visit.

Garden: Dogs on leads are welcome in the garden every day.

Eat: Visitors with dogs are welcome to sit in the Muddy Paws Engine House in the Timber Yard, which follows the same opening hours as the Timber Yard Café. Unfortunately, due to the size and layout of the Timber Yard Café, dogs are not permitted inside. If you’re visiting alone please use the doggy doorbell and one of our team members will pop out to take and bring your order to you.

Shop: Pop into our Timber Yard Shop with your four-legged friend to check out our range of dog treats and accessories.

Crow Wood Playscape: Dogs on a short lead are welcome in to the play area. Help us ensure this is a clean, safe space for children to play by being extra vigilant to prevent dog fouling and not taking dogs near the tunnels or onto the play equipment.

Only assistance dogs are welcome inside the house, café and shops.

Ness is located on the Wirral, with fantastic views across the River Dee to North Wales. They were originally created by Arthur Kilpin Bulley. He was passionate about plants, especially new plants being introduced to European gardens from China, Tibet and Nepal.

Bulley outgrew his original garden by persuading diplomats and other travellers to send him back seeds of interesting plants.  In 1898, he bought the land that makes up Ness, to build a new family home and larger garden.

He went on to sponsor many plant hunting expeditions and established Bees Nursery, so he could share these new introductions with gardeners across the country.  Bees became a household name through its cheap packets of seeds, sold for decades at Woolworth's. After his death in 1942, Bulley's daughter Lois presented Ness to the University of Liverpool with an endowment of £75,000.

Since then, original areas like the Rock Garden have been reinvigorated and new areas such as the Water Gardens and Mediterranean Banks developed by our talented team of staff and volunteers. The gardens are also used by the University for research from plant science through to archaeology. This compliments our education programme for schools and adults using the incredible plants and landscape of the gardens.

Today, Ness Botanic Gardens offers something to visitors of all ages, regardless of which season they visit in. They run an events programme packed with family activities from star gazing to trails and crafts. The gardens are also a popular venue for weddings.

Our garden calendar begins with snowdrop displays in February and continues into spring with camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias. From early summer, the Victorian style vegetable garden – the Potager and 100 metres of herbaceous borders burst into life. Then there are the 4 hectares of wild flower meadows to enjoy that form the centre piece of the WilderNess project which brings wildlife to your doorstep with over 600 species of birds, mammals, bees, butterflies and other insects.  Autumn brings fabulous shows of berries and colour from the garden’s varied collections of trees including a National Collection of Sorbus (rowans and whitebeams), and beautiful bark and foliage of birches and maples.

We look forward to seeing you soon, or to quote Arthur Kilpin Bulley; "Welcome friend and welcome stranger, welcome one and welcome all".

Enjoy a delicious range of hot food, sandwiches, homemade cakes and coffees at The Garden Kitchen Cafe.
