Neston has always been an important town locally, despite its changing fortunes as a medieval agricultural settlement, 17th century port, mining village and market town.

The town hosts both traditional and farmers’ markets and boasts a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants.

Close by is the coastal village of Parkgate. The seafront here is a great vantage point from which visitors can enjoy the surrounding salt marshes. These are an ideal habitat for duck, wild geese and sea birds making the village a popular destination for bird watchers and naturalists.

Parkgate was once a busy port, but the high tide on the promenade is seen only a few times throughout the year.

Close to Neston and Parkgate are Ness Botanic Gardens. Overlooking the Dee Estuary they contain the finest collection of rhododendrons and azaleas in the North-West; one of the best-known heather gardens in Britain; and an outstanding collection of Himalayan and Chinese plants.
