Magnificent Georgian Church set in spacious grounds in heart of Macclesfield town centre.
Built in 1775 by local industrialist Charles Roe, Christ Church was constructed of brick, using innovative cast iron columns to support the galleries. This is a very early use of cast iron in a church and may reflect Roe's innovative and entrepreneurial character. The building has a huge interior including an encircling gallery. The large space is particularly enthralling for youngsters to explore. The organ is available to be played and visitors are most welcome to have a go. Closed for worship in 1981 and in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. Opening arranged by volunteer 'Roe-naissance Group'. We are collecting memorabilia for display, reminiscences to capture and ideas for its future use.
Max 12 people per tour/session. No booking required
